This is how pervasive the CHRISTmas nonsense has become. I play the on-line game Wizard 101, rather addictively, for several hours a day AND I participate in the discussions on their FB wall. I made my avatar a FB page (well, one of my avatars, you get six on an account, but the one I started with) and post under that pseudonym because I prefer to keep it separate from the one I do all the political ranting under my real name.

In the game, which is a Wizard school, circa turn of the previous century setting, they called the holiday season Yuletide. I thought that appropriate given the game's atmosphere but, of course, one of the CHRISTmas crowd comes on the FB page whining how dare they call it Yuletide instead of CHRISTmas when it was all about the baby Jesus.

Now I keep it toned down on that FB wall because it's a very family friendly game and they struggle to keep it that way, which I appreciate and cooperate enthusiastically in censoring myself. And they will ban you -- understandably given their business (lot of grandparents playing but most like me were brought there by their grandkids) -- for cussing or inappropriate commenting.

But I did politely disagree along the lines of what you said here correcting them and also stating that I was an Atheist player and I appreciated the neutrality.

Once I commented along that line, others jumped in and seconded my comments and backed up what I said about Xmas being stolen etc. It effectively closed the whine down and no one else posted any it's CHRISTmas not Yuletide nonsense. Though there was also a day later a whine about saying Xmas instead of CHRISTmas which I silenced with one link to a Christian website nonetheless explaining that it was the Church's own abbreviation from back in the day.

And the game's employees who monitor the page wisely abstained from saying anything on either post. Just let us do it for them. :)

David, just caught up my listening and want to thank you for the shout-outs and reading my other comment on the air. Occupy Albany has been so up and down and frankly loopy that my support has wavered but overall, yes, this so needs to be done. Whatever comes of it, the whole Occupy movement is basically standing up to Wall Street and the White House bought by them.

I'm excited by the schedule changes over at ShockNet. I won't be on the chats because I have problems whenever I install the Java and lately my virus screeners don't even want to allow it but I'm hoping to listen live more often as I think that they will be coinciding to when I can listen live more. Yay! I'm really glad both that you're going to be on later and that American Heathen is moving to Saturday because I usually get up early on Saturdays and haven't been staying up to listen. It will be good to catch the show again.

Agreeing with you on where morals come from, David. And that people confuse laws with morals. Ideally, laws ARE moral but morals and law are two separate things and if you concede your morality to the government then you are going to blindly follow THE LAW even when it's immoral. Is it that difficult for people to figure out for themselves what's right and what's wrong?

I also appreciated your bit about violence. You are saying what I've been fearing for quite some time. I'd like to see a peaceful resolution for all this but it seems more and more clear all the time that the new aristocracy is not going to concede their assumed privilege without it. Just look at their reaction to Occupy Wall Street -- where the violence is already beginning in the form of police brutality towards the protesters.

Only thing I could quibble with this week, David, was the statement that renters don't pay property taxes and therefore don't care when they are raised. As a lifelong renter, I do object. We do pay taxes through our rent and then some. Landlords are in the rental business to make a profit and they charge rent accordingly. They are, naturally, going to charge more than the upkeep of the building and expenses like property and school taxes. I do indeed pay taxes. It just goes through my landlord. I've no desire to see them raise any more than the homeowners across the street from my apartment complex.

I, too, am disappointed, as are so any others, in the lack of what this administration has accomplished, especially for the economy. Waaaay too many people are still out of work. Playing nicely with other countries is definitely something that needs to be done, but shouldn't OUR unemployment rate be 1st in line for attention? And how about policing those sneaky banks who have wiped people's lives out, just out of greed, then taken the profits in huge bonuses for themselves?

I think Rahm is very, very smart, but also very secretive about his priorities. And the Prez just should have pushed more & louder for the reforms he promised, and with the enthusiasm he helped everybody feel that things were going to improve quickly.

He should have paid attention to the old adage: Always give people MORE than you promised them, not less.

I'd say it's more of a party of spoiled brats. They scream "political correctness" but then demand people not only not use words that offend them, but be fired for doing it *cough*Palin*cough*; knocking the olive branch from the hands of those that offer it, turning against members of their own party for having different ideas or point out their mistakes (Megan McCain), being so obsessed with stopping the other guy that nothing gets done/fixed and expecting everyone else to fight their battles (despite not helping when war called for them) and then ridicule them when they have a problem.

That's a really entertaining take! I've long argued that the key thing about theocrats is their desire for power and privilege, since they already have religious freedom. I like your analogy for those dynamics - and it's true - faith is often used as a trump card. (just as Bush cited his "gut," which knew more than all those experts with those "facts.")

The idea that if an idea is part of a religion makes it somehow makes it above question has always been a mystery to me. More recently, I've been wondering why really crazy religious beliefs should be above ridicule.

For me, it's about the people. I try not to ridicule someone's profoundly held beliefs, assuming they're not awful people, of course. At the same time, I do resent the implication that I have to do this just because it's a religious belief, as if that makes it somehow unassailable.

You're right, rhetorically speaking, people often do use religion as a cheat code.

Well that wasn't as bad as I thought. I actually agreed with you by and large. To enjoy Valentine's Day, you just can't buy into the hype.
